So you may ask what is 710 and why is it relevant? Well, much like the well-known 4/20 celebrations we celebrate around the world on April 20th (or celebrate daily at 4:20 PM!!), 7/10 or 710 is a more concentrated version of the same thing. Allow me to explain. There is a new frontier in this blossoming industry and it goes by the name DABS! Dabbing refers to vaping highly potent essential oils that are extracted from your lovely plant materials. We talk a lot about oil, different types of oil, how they are made (solvent-less, Rosin, BHO etc.) and how you can vape them. This is an entire new industry that is blowing up from under us and we're just trying to keep up! 710 when flipped vertical and reversed spells OIL and that is what we're all here to celebrate! Beautiful, clean solvent-less oil! There are lots of different types of oil out there in different forms so lets dig a little and share some information about the importance of this holiday. Here are the most common forms of extracts and oils available on the market today.
This is a very common form of concentrate that is produced using a solvent which extracts the essential oils. The name itself refers to the form of the concentrate at the end of extraction which can in some cases have a hard glass-type consistency. The product is normally a yellow-brown colour and the clarity of the oil determines the quality.

Similarly, wax is a form of oil that really refers to the consistency of the material - here you'll find the wax concentrate is stickier and a little more challenging to work with when inserting the concentrate into your vape.

Gummies, candies, fruits, syrups & more! Edibles typically are infusions made with CO2 oil.. This refers to the type of extraction method used and I'll talk more about this below.
- Solvent extraction is the most common method of extracting essential oils. Its the cheapest but also the most volatile and unsafe method of performing an extraction. Major processing on the extracted oil is required including 'purging' of the end product to remove harmful toxins in the solvent itself. I believe that solvent based extractions are becoming a something of the past. There are now much safer, more efficient and cleaner ways to produce extractions.
- Non-solvent extraction means that the essential oils are extracted in a natural way without the use of solvents to strip the ingredients from the dry plant material. The oldest non-solvent extraction is done by pressing together with strong heat, the tiny crystals on the surface of the plant called pollen that is pressed between plates. This is a very common form of concentrate and very popular throughout Europe and is beginning to become are more widespread method of extraction. The latest innovations in technology revolve around CO2 extraction which I'll cover below.
Roisin Tech uses high pressure along with heat to squeeze the oil out of the flowers. This is similar to the same method used for many commercial oil production applications.Rosin Presses are available in various sizes from home units to industrial production units. The technology however is the same. Rosin is a form of oil that is produced by squeezing the plant's flowers under pressure with heat inside of a non-stick surface to extract the oil from the material. The yield achieved with this form of extraction varies a lot depending on the quality of the material itself (as with all extractions) and the heat/pressure combination. Ideally you want to press materials with the highest pressure and lowest temperature to preserve as much of the flavour as possible! - CO2 extraction is the latest innovation in this industry. The technology itself has existed for a long time and is commonly used in processes like decaffeination of coffee. When CO2 is compressed to the right pressure and heated to certain temperatures, it enters a state called 'super-critical' which means that the CO2 acts as a solvent liquid in a state between liquid and gas. The super-critical CO2 is pumped through the dry plant material which creates the extraction and when the CO2 is depressurised and evaporates, it leaves a clean solvent-less concentrate behind. The most impressive thing about CO2 extraction is that the solubility of the CO2 is adjustable. By varying pressure and temperature you can do multiple 'runs' on the product at different points to extract different components of the plant, pretty cool!
